Darfur
under fire
In Darfur, women and children fear for their lives as brutal attacks by government-sponsored militias continue.

With the support of Relief International and the Tech Museum Awards, the GlobalGiving community now has a unique opportunity to help the people of Darfur restore their lives.

More than 1.6 million people have been displaced, and an estimated 300,000 Sudanese have died since the systematic slaughter, rape, starvation and displacement began in 2003. Through GlobalGiving, you can support the following relief and rebuilding projects in Sudan:

Practical Protection for Women in Darfur, Sudan - This project provides fuel-efficient stoves to Darfurian women, lowering the risk of sexual and gender-based violence by reducing dependence on high-risk excursions for firewood.

  • A contribution of $12 could train three Sudanese women to use fuel-efficient camp stoves.

Livestock Support Program for Sudanese Families - This project will save vulnerable livestock in Darfur, thereby improving the population's economic standing and food security.

  • For as little as $10, provide care and food for a donkey, which is a critical source of income for families in Darfur.

Wiring the Global Village IT in a Developing World - In war-torn areas such as the Sudan, NetHope identifies field IT hardware and software requirements, trains staff, and provides simple, long-term solutions to improve regional communications.

  • "NetHope pools the expertise of NGOs to reach the challenged areas of the world, making it faster and more effective to deliver aid," Edward Happ (NetHope Chair and Chief Technology Officer for Save the Children).

Let the people of Darfur know that you are paying attention. Donate today!

Across the brisk waters of the North Atlantic -- in the Northwest Territory -- lies Baffin Island, where an all-female team of North Face athletes is helping to raise money for women and children in need. As part of their skiing and kite-sailing expedition, these athletes plan to visit the Qimaavik Transition House, a shelter that enables women and children to escape violent situations.

Together with the GlobalGiving community, the North Face expedition will raise funds to revitalize this much-needed shelter.

North
Face athletes support women of Baffin Island
The money raised through GlobalGiving and the North Face expedition will support a battered women and children's shelter in Baffin Island.

The women and children residents of Qimaavik have experienced violence in their lives and are in need of an uplifting atmosphere that will further promote the process of healing. Ultimately, the money will be allocated to improvements in the 21-bed shelter house, which is currently in disrepair and unsuitable for the needs of its tenants.

These renovations would also take significant pressure off of the in-house counseling staff, which is working tirelessly to help victims of abuse cope on a daily basis. Learn more about how you can support this project.
