PROJECT UPDATE: Kibera medical clinic going strong

As one of the first projects on GlobalGiving, Carolina for Kibera has attracted considerable support from donors over recent years. Here is an update on their Medical Clinic from Rye Barcott, CfK's President.

Rye Clinic in Kibera, Kenya specializes in maternal health, but also offers primary care to all residents on a sliding-fee scale.

Kibera
  • Rye Clinic is one of the only clinics in Kibera that offers in-patient and out-patient medical services to residents 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In 2003 the clinic attended to 5,422 patients, roughly 15 patients per day. The majority of the clinic's patients were treated for one or more of the following afflictions: malaria, typhoid, diofuse, vomiting, and complications related to HIV/AIDS. The clinic continues to offer services at no charge to a small number of widows and AIDS orphans, and currently supports 8 HIV/AIDS patients.

  • With support from Raleigh-based Stop Hunger Now, the clinic teamed up with Nyumbani Children?s Home and began training its staff in home-based care to visit patients at home, monitor their progress, and report back to the clinic. By the end of the year, the clinic and Nyumbani trained 16 women in home-based care.

  • Led by Father Angelo D'Agostino, a medical doctor and Jesuit priest, Nyumbani is a children's home for HIV/AIDS orphans. Rye Barcott and Father D'Agostino established a partnership between CFK and Nyumbani at Christmas time in 2002. CFK and Nyumbani have co-authored a proposal to the Kenyan government to allow each organization to receive medicines with short shelf lives from Eli Lilly?s Africa office.

Social Edge launches Building Blended Value Series

The Blended Value Series will be held on Social Edge socialedge.org, the largest online community dedicated to social entrepreneurship. It will further develop the ideas presented in the Blended Value Map (blendedvalue.org). In this series they will explore ways of creating synergies among various silos of related activity-business, social, academic, and government-in an attempt to support those already working across silos and to spark interdisciplinary initiatives.

The series will take place over the next 5 months (March 23 to July 30) and address a variety of related, cross-cutting issues such as the capital challenge, performance metrics, the regulatory environment and other areas critical to each of our work. Over the course of this series, literally hundreds of leading thinkers and practitioners worldwide will converge virtually through Social Edge, and discuss key issues surrounding these themes.

In addition to simply discussing these questions, they also intend to use this forum to help shape various ideas for effecting change in these arenas as well. You are invited to participate in this "phase two" process of moving from talk to action.

Participating is easy. The Social Edge website has a discussion board, where community members create posts on different topics related to the theme. Special guests log on every other day and post messages. Please let them know if you would be interested in participating as a special guest from May 4 to May 18 to discuss issues of performance metrics. You can contact them through Vaz Douglas at vaz@skollfoundation.org or (408) 278-2234. Your presence would be of great benefit to everyone involved.

To participate, go to socialedge.org.
